[ 2017 Field Study ] -むらのこしMURA NOKOSHI - Cultural Understanding / Rural development

 30th June 2017 ～5th July 2017 @ Nagano

Oami is a beatiful small village located in the north of Nagano Prefecture.  The villagers are offspring of Shingen Takeda and have protected the indigenous culture for 450 years.  The village used to be productive with agriculture, forest industory, mining industory, hydroelectric power generation, hot spring resorts and industrial enterprises, but 70% of the population was lost by tuberculosis and also the whole village was burned out by a big fire.  Addition to these incidents young people deserted it to get a job in cities.  Now only 50 senior citizens stay in the village.  With the support of the administration and young new settlers from other prefectures, the village is looking for a way to survive.  SIS students learn the model of depopulation measures by the government and private sectors.  Needless to say the students enjoy themselves with socializing with the seniors in the peaceful old village.

Activities:

farm work, Sushi making, Selling rice cakes in the ceremony at a shrine, tree trimming/wood chopping, making adobe brick, visiting another deserted village Yokogawa, making preserved foods

村のこしプログラムでは、「つちのいえ」に宿泊し、8人の仲間と共にとても濃い6日間を過ごしました。杉の伐採は、皆で協力し、少しずつノコギリとナタで木を切り倒しました。ナタが重く、なかなか同じところに打つことができませんでした。何とか何時間もかけて木を切った後、専門家の方がチェーンソーであっという間に小さく分解していくのを見て、複雑な気持ちになりました。日干しレンガ作りでは、土とワラを発酵させてこねたものをレンガ型の木枠に入れ、日向で乾燥させました。全身土だらけになりましたが、この煉瓦でできたかまどなら、きっと美味しいご飯が炊きあがるはずだと思いました。田んぼの草むしりは、泥と格闘しながら進み、目標の半分ほどしか進めませんでしたが、お米を食べられることに感謝の念を抱くようになりました。廃村した横川集落では、神社の屋根や灯篭が地面に埋まった上を歩き、人がいなくなったらすべて自然に還るのだとしみじみ感じました。都会のコンクリートでできた建物やアスファルトで塗装された道は、「人がいなくなったら果たして自然に還れるのか」と思いました。私は便利な都会に住み、この生活が当たり前で、元々どのようなやり方だったのかを知っていたつもりでした。しかし、実際自分で作業してみると想像していたより大変で、便利な生活のありがたみを身に染みて感じました。機械化された便利な生活も悪くはないですが、一つ一つできるだけ自分たちの手で作っていく暮らしも素敵だと思いました。人口50人という小さな集落で、皆さん暖かくて、元気で、とても良い所でした。ここで得た体験や伺ったお話を参考に、SGHの論文を書き上げたいと思います。

【教師の感想】

村のこしの参加者は、使命感を抱き、集落の人々を助けるつもりで赴くのですが、いつの間にか逆におじいさん、おばあさんから元気をいただいています。いつも集落の皆さんのシニアパワーに圧倒されます。

杉の伐採作業：長野県北部は豪雪地帯のため、雪の重みで杉の根元が曲がって育ちます。

自然の恵みをいただく：毎食、畑で採れたものやご近所からいただいたものを使って料理をします。

旧横川集落神社跡：廃村から50年、人が居なくなっても神社の灯篭はひたすら集落を守り続けます。
